The top 10 hiking gear picks of 2019 can be a mix of the oldies but goodies and newbies.  There are so many great and amazing hiking gear out there. This isn’t your grandparents days, these days are filled with innovation even in the hiking and camping world.  We have more electronics than ever that need charging while out hiking. And, the gear is getting lighter and lighter. Let’s dive into the hiking gear world and see what great and amazing things make the top 10!


1.  Nite Eze is full of innovation

They have some great hiking products as well as products in general.  They are just a very innovative company indeed. Some things we have found there are Gear Tie, which would be great for hiking.  Since many times you have to hold things together in your pack and this is reusable rubber twist tie. They show it on garden hoses, however, they would be great for looping on backpacks or chairs and other gear.

They also have another “gear tie” that is made of foam that would come in handy with the pack.  These are reusable twist ties but because they are foam they are gentle on whatever is being tied on.  And, these would just be great to have on hand, as at one point or another the light needs to be hung from the tent pole.  Or use them to attach your water bottle to your belt loop, just about anything can be temporarily attached with ease.


2.  The MSR Hubba Tent Series

These tents have some of the most amazing tent poles.  Yes, poles, these poles are amazing, super strong, flexible and resist breaking.  Getting your pack lightweight is something that the industry is working toward. The Hubba NX 2 is only 3 lbs 8 oz which makes it simple to bring along on the next hike.  This is a great 2 person 3 season tent. The idea is that tent poles have been made from aluminum since the 70’s and it’s time for a change. This tent series has decided to take on the challenge and become innovative with the design.  These poles are great for hiking as they resist breaking which is good for the pack.


3.  Princeton TEc Snap Modular Headlamp Kit

Lighting isn’t a super fun subject, however, it’s certainly needed.  And getting great lighting while hiking, camping and setting up camp is important.  The SNAP modular headlamp kit is bright and comes with a variety of accessories. This small but mighty headlamp simply snaps onto the accessories via a magnet.  These accessories are things like a headband, flashlight, bike light and more. This little mighty light will brighten your way and will attach to just about anything metal.

This raft will roll up to the size of a roll of paper towel for one person.  And, it weighs only 4.9 lbs, which is great for hiking. The bottom is made of Kevlar and it has D rings for option paddling comfort.  These are great when planning a nice hike around a lake, river or stream. Take a ride downstream and hike your way back for a change of pace.

What would a list be without Biolite?  Yes, Biolite is leading the way for hiking and camping lighting ideas as well as charging ports.  This company is responsible for many unique gadgets and are known for their chargers. They offer charges for your phone that pull the energy from burning wood.  However, they are coming out with a very unique headlamp in 2019. This headlamp is super lightweight and very bright. It is bright enough for night hikes as well being on 2.3oz.  And, in that weight is a rechargeable battery. The battery can find it’s recharging power from one of Biolite’s amazing stoves or Solar panels.

Biolite is one of the leading companies for hikers and campers.  They offer a huge line of Biolite products that are both innovative and light.  Taking on the new world of hiking and camping with modern day devices can present some challenges.  Things like dead batteries can be a real issue but with Biolite they have made it easy. They offer a line of solar power panels and wood stoves that can power and charge all your devices with ease.


7.  Keen Venture Boot

This boot is not only lightweight and full of design innovation but it’s comfortable as well.  Keeping your feet from getting wet is important when on the hiking trails and this boot will do that just that.  It’s waterproof yet flexible and breathable all in one boot. Keen offers a slimmer and light design with a more bold look that some of the other hiking boots out there.  It weighs 17 ounces. Having a great boot is important when setting out on a hiking adventure.

But, Keen has more than just the Venture Boot.  There is a whole amazing line-up of shoes to choose from.  This hiking footwear company has all the bells and whistles to choose from when it comes to hiking footwear.  Getting the right fit and feel is important on having an enjoyable hike.


8.  NEMO Dragonfly 2 Person Tent

This is an ultralight tent that is due to release in Jan. or Feb. of 2019 to rival that of the Big Agnes Copper Spur tent series which as dominated the market in recent years for ultralight tents.  The NEMO Dragonfly will come in 1 or 2 person size and will weigh and cost less than the Copper Spur and will weigh in at 2 lbs and 10 oz. This is an incredibly lightweight which is perfect for hiking the trails.

NEMO Hornet is another great lightweight choice that will hit the market soon.  The NEMO Hornet semi-free standing tent has been on the market, however, they have done some upgrades!  There has been a fly bar and top clips added which add a little more headroom inside. This tent is a bit small and getting a 2 person for one person is recommended, however, it does come in a one-person variety as well.

If you are not looking for a lightweight tent but a sleeping bag, NEMO has those as well.  This is yet another innovative company that takes lightweight hiking seriously and is striving to be the best in the industry.

NEMO’s sleeping bags are a wonderful choice for sleeping comfort.  They offer regulated gills for those warmer temperatures as well as being a conventional mummy style sleeping bag which helps with keeping the weight down.  These aren’t the absolute lightness sleeping bags on the market, but they will give the others the run for their money. As they will be at very nice price points as well.  And, they will weigh approx. 1 lb 13 oz. They are 800 fill dry down.


9.  Granite Gear Blaze 60

Granite gear blaze 60 is a lightweight backpack that packs some power.  Getting the most from your backpack is important and let’s not start out by having a heavy load before we put anything on it.  The Granite gear blaze 60 weighs in at 3 lbs and is made of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. It is fully adjustable and has a re-fit hip belt and zippered side pocket with large hip belt pockets as well.  There is both men and women’s version and comes out in the spring of 2019.


10.  Katadyn BeFree Water Filter

The Katadyn BeFree Collapsible Water Filter bottle is high flow and lightweight water bottle designed to filter water while hiking.  They offer a 1 liter and 20 oz bottle size version and have a 1000 liter capacity. They then will need to be replaced. With a large opening at the top, they can filter 1 liter of water in 30 seconds, however, this non-standard size does make it incompatible with other things that are made for hiking using the standard water bottle opening.  The filter will filter out .1 micron which will work with most of North America’s water supplies taking out the protozoa and bacteria, however, it will not filter out viruses.

These are just some of the great lightweight hiking gear that is out there.  There literally is 1000’s of hiking products with amazing innovation built right in.  If you are looking for a water filter system, there are all kinds, so take time to decide which is right for you.  This is the same for the tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, and backpacks. The options are truly endless and much of it comes down to personal preference.  Things like how often you will use the gear and in what climates should be considered as well.
