Day hiking is a lot of fun. You can go, enjoy nature and come home to your own bed. However, there are some things that you should consider taking along with you when you are on your day hiking experience. These things will make your day hike more enjoyable and safer as well.
When deciding you are going on a day hike, you will need to determine where you want to hike. There are all kinds of hiking trails around that are nice cleared paths, or you can go it on your own and hike across a forest. If you don’t plan on taking the trail option, you will need a few more things in your day pack.
Going off the trail hiking can be really exciting but you need to take precautions to ensure that you are safe. Things like telling a friend where you will be hiking, in case you don’t return by dark. Even experienced hikers have gotten lost and needed some help.
Yes, your phone is a great tool for hiking. But, it is also electronic that can get dropped or broken fairly easily, so don’t rely on just that. You will need to take a compass and map with you.
Take note of where you enter and how you plan your day. This will allow you to be safe while hiking. Pay attention to your surroundings as well so that you don’t get turned around. Some of the basics are where the sun is, that is a good indicator of the directions. At noon this isn’t going to help as much but for most of the day, you have it as your guide if it is out. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
Also, take a backpack with the essentials in it such as sunblock and bug spray. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and food that isn’t super heavy is a good idea as well. Wear layers, so that if it gets hotter, you can remove layers but you can also add when its cooler. Also, some wet wipes would be good, in case your hands get dirty before you have time to eat.
And, of course, a basic first aid kit just in case. Yes, your phone is a good thing to bring along too. But, be sure you aren’t on it the whole time. Use it to check the time or maybe some photos but otherwise leave it in the bag and enjoy your day electronic free! This is a great way to clear your head and get a little exercise at the same time.
A pair of binoculars is one of the best pieces of equipment you can bring on your day hike. Why? Because a key part of exploring the great outdoors is learning to embrace the wildlife around you. On a hike, you’re likely to come across a variety of species, be it aerial wonders like a soaring buzzard or scampering woodland critters like the common grey squirrel. Having binoculars to hand allows you to get a better view without disturbing these animals in their natural habitat.
It’s recommended you purchase binoculars from nature charities because they give back to the area where you’re exploring. For instance, if you buy them from RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) your money is reinvested in supporting nature reserves and the vital conservation work that goes on there.
Enjoy and Relax
If you are taking a pet along with you on your hike, be sure that you carry along the water for the pet as well. It is important everyone stays hydrated on this adventure. And, enjoy yourself and the freedom from the screens and noise of the world. Take your time to take in the sun and fresh air and all the sounds around you. Relax while you are hiking and enjoy your day.
I have been camping and going outdoors for over 15 years! My first experience was when I joined the scouts. There I learned a lot. From building a campfire to set up a really big tent. Then I know this is awesome. Around 2005 I also started Geocaching. This is a lot of fun. And every time we go camping we look at the map to see if there are some nice caches around.
