7 Must Have Winter Camping Essentials

Winter is a season for retreat – snow, cool winds and a dearth of sunlight are trials on both the body and the spirit. The solitude and silent surroundings that winter offers make up for a memorable camping experience, which is one of the reasons why it is rapidly popularizing. However, the whole endeavor can turn into a mess if you fail to pack all the right essentials. But don’t worry. If you have no idea where to get started or lack the direction, we are here to help.

Following are 7 winter camping essentials that will improve your safety and comfort during the activity.

1. Stoves (more than one)
Stoves will not only help you keep warm, but also come in handy should you decide to prepare a snack or cook a meal. However, stoves can fail in winter without a warning. Both gas stoves and canister stoves are not a 100% reliable when going for winter camping, which is why it is always best to pack more than one stove. This little folding camp stove is one of our favorites and is super small and durable.

2. Boil-In-Bags of Food
The good thing about cold weather is that you can carry cooked frozen meals and eat them rather than preparing a bad dehydrated camping meal that takes forever to rehydrate. When it comes to winter camping, boil-in-a-bag stew-like meals work perfectly and can be found in most supermarkets.

3. Lithium Batteries
Alkaline batteries tend to fail in cold temperatures since they are made with a water-based electrolyte solution. On the other hand, lithium batteries are way more powerful and perform better, making them ideal for flashlights, headlamps, and other similar essential electronics.

4. Dry Clothes
The clothes you will be wearing during the trip will eventually get wet from the sweat and falling snow. To avoid such a situation, make sure you have numerous layers of dry clothes that you can change into should you get wet.

5. A Warm Sleeping Bag
Since you will be sleeping in a tent in winter, you will need something that can provide you an added layer of heat, so bring a sleeping bag designed especially for winters, one that will be rated for the expected temperature. This Coleman Mummy style sleeping bag is rated down to 0 degrees and is available for just under $35

6. A Bombproof Tent
After a sleeping bag, the second most important piece of gear is a bombproof tent. Expedition tents typically feature extra guy-lines, sturdier fabrics, stronger poles, etc. which make an excellent choice for winter camping.

7. A Big Puffy Coat
With the right sleeping bag and right tent, you will be warm when sleeping, but in order to stay warm when you are standing around, you will need a big coat that can keep you toasty. The idea is to go for something that is big enough to fit all of your clothing layers.

Bringing these above mentioned 7 essentials will help you prepare for a memorable winter camping experience.
